Philosophy

The teachings of Shorinji Kempo are based on the original philosophy taught by Buddha which is aimed at refining man's physical and mental abilities as a whole unit. No thought is given to an afterlife or worshipping Deities or God. So the central theme is to develop a well balanced human being with the self discipline to look after himself and be productive to society as a whole.

In short Shorinji Kempo is a Martial Art developed in conjunction with Zen meditation and the study of philosophy to cultivate the mind and body together.

honbu imageDoshin So,the person who introduced Shorinji Kempo into Japan, had been living in the Manchuria region of China with his grandfather since his early childhood, and later from the mid 1920s to the end of the Second World War. During this time he practised martial arts under several masters while doing topography studies. At a later date he was introduced to Bun Taiso, a grand master of Quan Fa and became one of his students. After several years he was taken to the Shaolin temple and made the 21st master of the Giwamonken style of Quan Fa.
On his return to Japan he formed the Japanese Shorinji Kempo Federation and began teaching Buddist philosophy in conjunction with the Martial art techniques he had learned in China. In 1979 he was invited to China by the Chinese government and asked to reintroduce Quan Fa to the Shaolin temple. Unfortunately he passed away one year later before he could take up this task. However since being founded in Japan, Shorinji Kempo has spread to 29 different countries and is governed by his senior pupils and daughter.
Shorinji Kempo was introduced to New Zealand in 1973 by students from the Kyoto University of foreign studies. There are now three clubs in Auckland with several senior black belt instructors coaching Shorinji Kempo. The Auckland Central club was founded in 1973.
